Category: Experience Marketplace / Tourism / Diaspora Commerce

Sri Lankan Escapes is a curated experiential gifting platform designed for Sri Lankans living abroad to seamlessly gift travel, dining, wellness, and health experiences to loved ones in Sri Lanka.

The project involved transforming a concept-driven business proposal into a fully structured, scalable digital product — combining emotional storytelling with frictionless booking and operational clarity.

The Problem

Sri Lankan expatriates often struggle to:

  • Send meaningful gifts to loved ones back home
  • Coordinate health checkups or travel experiences remotely
  • Trust local service providers from overseas
  • Manage bookings across time zones

Traditional gifting (flowers, vouchers, money transfers) lacked emotional impact and personalization.

There was no centralized, trusted digital platform for experiential gifting tailored to the Sri Lankan diaspora.

The Opportunity

The platform targets:

  • ~2 million Sri Lankans living abroad
  • Parents gifting children
  • Children gifting elderly parents
  • Families reconnecting
  • Corporate gifting

The opportunity was to design:

A seamless, emotionally-driven digital platform that transforms gifting into an experience journey.

UX Strategy

Primary User Persona

Sri Lankan expat (Age 28–55)

  • Lives in Australia, UK, Canada
  • Wants to gift parents or family
  • Time-poor
  • Needs trust & clarity
  • Wants confirmation & reliability

Core UX Principles

  1. Emotional-first storytelling
  2. Frictionless booking
  3. Clear package structure
  4. Strong trust indicators
  5. Simplified checkout flow

Information Architecture

The platform was structured into clear categories:

  • Travel Packages
  • Entertainment
  • Dining
  • Health Packages
  • Religious Tours
  • Group Packages

Navigation needed to feel intuitive for older users as well as tech-savvy diaspora.

Key UX Challenges & Solutions

Some packages required:

  • Check-in dates

Solution:

  • Multi-step booking flow
  • Gift Basket system
  • “Continue to Personal Details” progression
